Learn to ski is a first ski experience for the youngest and newest skiers. Each little skier is required to have an adult with them for the duration of the session. It’s best, but not required, that the adult be on skis (it’s more fun, and you’ll learn too!)

Skis: Learn-to-ski skiers need one pair of classic skis and boots. Classic skis can be skin skis or fishscale skis. Skate skis will not work in this program.

Description

Learn-to-ski is our introductory program for the tiniest of skiers. This program is for ages 4-8, though 4-6 is the predominant age group.

  • Learn-to-ski equipment is just boots and classic skis, either skins or fishscale skis. We don’t use poles, and skate skis will not work for this program.
  • This is a volunteer-run, parent-led program, and parents don’t need to have ski experience to participate.
  • Skiers will learn to move around on skis through games and play.
  • Skiers in Learn-to-ski must be accompanied by an adult, preferably on skis to protect the ski track from boots.

Part Time (1-day): Member price: $375 (Non-member $450) Equipment Rental Package: $75 Age Group: 7th - 12th grade Active Dates: December 1st - March 4th Schedule: 4:15 - 5:45 Tue, Thu Location: Mountain Dell when there is snow, local locations if there is not snow early in the season. Depending on snow coverage, coaches may hold some dryland training session in town or ski session at trailheads around Salt Lake. They'll opt for free skiing as much as possible! Past locations include: Sugarhouse Park (dryland and some skiing), local hiking trails, Spruces Campground in Big Cottonwood, State Route 65 (near Mountain Dell), Alta Ski Resort Contact: tunacoach@utahnordic.org Refund Policy: Due to demands on our staff, a $20 service fee will apply to refunds before December 15, 2025.

This program is non-refundable after Dec 15th. In the event of lack of snow at Mountain Dell, classes will be moved to areas with snow or rescheduled.

Equipment Purchase

If you're looking for your own equipment, here are some reputable shops who carry Nordic skis and boots: REI , Gear West, Wasatch Touring, Amazon, The House, Ski Rack You need to have: 1 pair skate skis, skate boots, 1 pair of poles. For classic, the best option is a pair of skin skis, classic boots, and classic length poles. The coaches can help with sizing for all of the options, and skiers can also opt for a "Combi" boot that will be able to be used for both techniques.
