Groomed for skate and classic to the first switchback this evening. The first mile or so is thin but firm. Don’t go Klaebo on it and you’re unlikely to hit pavement, with one exception: The usual thin area on a slight crown several hundred yards from the gate is super-thin and has a limited area of asphalt showing. Caution here will reward you with good skiing up the hill. It’s hard and fast to the restroom. We groomed from there to the first switchback for the first time this evening and it was a soft mess. After several passes it seem surprisingly firm. A couple classic skiers said it was supportive for pole planting and good to go. So go in the morning before it gets buggered up in the various ways that make us sad.
