TUNA follows the development recommendations for the US Ski team. Because this age group can have multiple abilities, we offer three options for middle grades students depending on their number of years in the sport.

Devo Middle Grades

A learning group for middle schoolers who are new to skiing will be formed based on demand. Middle school students learning to ski will be placed wither others in their social age group. (establish a minimum number, otherwise perhaps can be placed with 4th/5th grade group). The emphasis will be on learning the basic techniques of Nordic skiing by playing games and going for group skis.

For those who are interested in racing, skiers in this group can race the Wasatch Citizens Series, and can also look to Junior Comp for the following years as they improve skills.

Ages: 11 – 14

Years in sport: 0-1

Equipment: One pair of Nordic ski Combi boots, one pair of classic skin skis, one pair of skate skis for older/more experienced skiers. Rentals will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. (Photos of skis)

Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 4:15 – 5:45. January and February

Visit the Devo Page for more information, here.

XC – Middle School

The XC program is designed around skiers who love to stay in shape by skiing in the winter, and perhaps compete in other sports year-round. It is skate-based and the emphasis is on fun, camaraderie, fitness, and skill. For those who wish to race, the Wasatch Citizens Series provides an entry to competition.

Middle grades skiers with no previous experience should register for Devo and will be placed with other peers to learn skills before moving to XC the following year.

Junior Comp

The Junior Comp program is a developmentally appropriate Nordic ski competition program for middle school students who have prior experience. The focus of this program is to allow these young athletes the appropriate training and skill development to race in the Intermountain Division in the U14 and U16 divisions. Skiers will also race in the Wasatch Citizens Series.

Years in sport: 2 – 8 (skiers with less experience should register for Devo).

*These ages are based on the USSA Development Windows for athletes. Skiers under the age of 11 may be admitted to the Junior Comp Program on a case-by-case basis and with prior approval from the coaching staff. Please email tunacoach@utahnordic.org for approval BEFORE signing up for this program.
