We have groomed the Lower and upper trails this morning. Current conditions are very icy! Both tracks will soften up throughout the day with the temperatures reaching the low 40’s. Our bridges are covered but please use caution when approaching and skiing over them as they are thinning and narrowing. We appreciate all patrons coming to ski the Ranch. The season is ending quickly, so make sure to come ski today!

I would (almost) never discourage someone from skiing, BUT at Spruces today, at least until it warms up, it will be a little rough-survival skiing with white knuckles and clenched teeth. Better in the afternoon. Just letting you know…
Tomorrow will be better.

Solitude Nordic

Beware the Ides of March! Middle and Little Redman were not groomed this morning. All other trails are groomed for SKATING only. No classic tracks. Fast snow-watch your speed, and don’t let anyone sneak up behind you and stab you in the back!

White Pine

Full on Spring conditions. Icy morning, sweet spot from about 10 til about 2, mushy in the afternoon. All trails are open, but ski with caution near thin or icy areas. Be aware of icy sections in the shade. Red wax and STRUCTURE today (yes, we’ll structure your skis for you for a small fee) The sale goes on with clothing marked way down. If you enjoy spring skiing and weigh around 145-160 pounds, there is one pair of marked down Salomon S-Lab white bases left.. just sayin.. One pair of Rossignol R Skin classics (155-185 lbs) left that are perfect for spring conditions as well.

Lessons are still available daily if you want to learn or fine tune your technique. Its a great time to embody some good habits to help you for this and future seasons. Check us out on the AP Newswire from yesterday! “Call of the wild: Great outdoors is great escape in pandemic”

Please purchase and display your pass! Help us remind walker, fat bikers. mountain bikers and dog owners that post holes and ruts are dangerous for skiers and really difficult to groom out. Help us remind them that Basin Recreation and Mountain Trails have wonderful multi-use trails just for those activities.

We have groomed for skate and set the classic lane on the Upper and Lower Trails last night. Coverage is still good with the new snowfall last night . Both tracks will soften up throughout the day with the temperatures reaching the low 40’s. Our bridges are covered but please use caution when approaching and skiing over them as they are thinning and narrowing. We appreciate all patrons coming to ski the Ranch. It should be a great day to come and ski! Have a great weekend!

Solitude Nordic

Warmer this morning with snow, wind and a little graupel thrown in the mix. Skiing on the lake is very windy with blowing and drifting snow, so skiing in the trees will be the best option. Everything groomed for skate skiing. No classic tracks today.

Mountain Dell

Mountain Dell Grooming Report for 3/14/21. Main, Mitten and Lollitop groomed for skate and classic. Beware, snow is very thin. Rock skis recommended. This is the last day of grooming. Enjoy.

White Pine

Happy Pi Day! another inch of fresh snow this morning! Definitely moderate temperatures so red wax and structure are the key. Everything groomed for skate this morning. All 22Km! Tracks will be set by around 10am now that the wind has died down. Should be a perfect ski day, so get here!

By the way, our sale starts today with big markdowns on remaining clothing, and great prices on remaining skis, boots and poles. All sales are final.

Please purchase and display your trail pass while skiing White Pine. Let everyone know that you are part of keeping skiing strong in Utah. Help us remind walkers, dog owners, sledders and fat bikers that the White Pine Ski Trails are for skiers. Our snowshoe trail is for snowshoers. There are wonderful multi-use opportunities at Round Valley and Basin Trails. Perfect places for those non-ski activities.

We’ll see you outside!

We have groomed for skate and set the classic lane on the Upper and Lower Trails last night. Coverage is still good with the new snowfall last night . Both tracks will be a little crusty and fast early morning because of colder temperatures last night. And will soften up throughout the day with the temperatures reaching the mid 30’s. We appreciate all patrons coming to ski the Ranch. It should be a great day to come and ski! Have a great weekend!

Solitude Nordic

Snowfall last night was 6 inches and trails are soft but looking good this morning. The cold temps this morning and a high of 21 today will keep the snow soft and from melting. Avoid the crowds at the resorts today by Nordic skiing up at Solitude.

The last hurrah! Main loop, partial Mitten, Boomerang and Lollypop were groomed for skate for those needing to rock one last day at the Dell.
Chances of a light dusting overnight. Ski fairly early and watch for bare spots and grass. On behalf of all us volunteer Mountain Dell groomers, thanks for skiing our track. We’d feel like idiots if nobody ever showed up ! Have a great Spring and Summer.

A bit longer than average post in order to help make informed decisions on skiing tomorrow morning.

I groomed for skate to Big Mountain Pass late this afternoon. The NWS point forecast for the reservoir is 26 degrees tonight with a dusting of snow. Nobody had destroyed the groom when I left around 6 p.m., so with a little luck, it ought to ski well in the morning.

Several caveats: There’s a good 300’ of walking to get to the first skiable snow. It’s very thin, and likely a tip-toe affair even with the freeze. Then there’s a short section requiring a walk. Snow is then continuous a couple hundred yards before the little dip-curve-climb at around the first mile (MM4), but there’s a short section of thin snow at the top of that tiny climb. It’s then good to the restroom. A maintenance pickup drove to the Affleck gate and left deep ruts. I was able to fill them fairly well, but they’re there. Finally, it’s very thin at Windy Corner (2nd switchback) where with wind sweeps the snow on the left and drifts it on the right.

Despite all those caveats, the corduroy looked good enough that I plan to sample it first thing in the morning. The walking and caution will be rewarded with a nice final ski this season.

Spruces

New snow yesterday was great! Very nice conditions this morning. We groomed all the loops. Unfortunately, one thin spot on the Lower Loop, north side, under the tree by the creek. We are down to the road there. Might be time to shovel a little snow. How about a little scavenger hunt – there used to be a ski jump at Spruces, where they would hold jumping competitions in the 1930s. The CCC built it under the direction of ski jump champion Alf Engen, who was also a CCC foreman. Can you find where it used to be?
